Very briefly on Sustainability;
It's a complicated subject
When I started working as a carpenter, I genuinely believed that I was picking a trade and a career that would have a positive effect on the environment. I naively thought it was simple in that, as a carpenter works with wood, and trees can be regrown, it was a sustainable choice. Which theoretically is true.
Little did I know about the destructive, polluting and extractive processes that are commonplace in the building industry, and when you start to consider all the adhesives, chemical solvents, plastic coatings and questionable forestry techniques, these problems most certainly extend into the field of carpentry.
I have absolutely no intention of green washing anybody, and I am the first to admit that I haven't yet worked out how to run a completely sustainable carpentry business. This is something that bothers me and weighs heavy on my mind.
Which is one of the reasons that I am now simplifying matters to concentrate on designing and making furniture, and I have started to learn environmentally friendly methods to produce high quality cabinets and tables.
In their book 'Sustainable & regenerative materials for architecture', Will McLean & Pete Silver write that "In the UN report Blend the trend: Pathways to a liveable planet as resource use spikes, the authors explain that 'over 55per cent of greenhouse gas emissions...up to 40 per cent of particulate matter health-related impacts...and 90 per cent of total land use-related biodiversity loss' are directly linked to the ways in which materials are extracted from the earth and processed."
Global warming is having a catastrophic effect on nature across the planet, and the huge increase in greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide are a contributing factor to this increase in temperature. On the United Nations website they state: 'The first 12-month period to exceed 1.5°C as an average was February 2023 – January 2024, boosted by El Niño, when the average temperature worldwide was estimated to be 1.52°C higher than 1850–1900'
Trees absorb CO2 through Photosynthesis and store the carbon in their wood.
If things are carefully made from wood in a thoughtful way, those things can store carbon from the atmosphere. What's more, if trees are responsibly grown, harvested and replanted, they can be hugely beneficial to biodiversity in general.
