About

Other than a short period studying Theatre Design at St Martins, I have no formal artistic training. However, I have designed and made clothes, crafted puppets and sets, written and performed in shows, created numerous artworks, and built bespoke furniture.

What is a Carpenter Artist?

In my opinion, a Carpenter Artist is someone who combines carpentry skills with an artistic practice. I have spent 6 years working as a professional carpenter, and much of that time I definitely wasn't working as an artist. I was however, accumulating the skills to confidently describe myself as a carpenter. During that period, I worked for a number of companies, numerous private clients and along the way gained an NVQ 2 in site carpentry, an SMSTS qualification, and became certified to install fire doors. How do I combine Carpentry and Art?

One of the ways I combine carpentry and art is to use a scroll saw to cut designs from reclaimed wood, and industrial offcuts of man made boards, such as MRMDF and plywood. I have accumulated a considerable quantity of these offcuts while working as a carpenter, and as an environmentally concerned artist, I feel a responsibility to do something creative with them. This has led me to call my current art project; Beauty from Waste

On this website, you will find a growing range of pieces, made from Reclaimed Wood, that are available to buy. I am also available for commissions.
