About Alex

Hello, I'm Alex. I am an interior carpenter, bespoke furniture maker and artist with a decade of experience working inside homes across Bristol.
My primary focus is helping you create beautiful, highly organized, and peaceful living spaces. Whether you are looking for a custom freestanding piece, perfectly fitted alcove cabinets, or a piece of reclaimed wood wall art, my role is to bring your vision to life using sustainable, hard-wearing materials that are built to last a lifetime.
Your Home, Designed Around You
Every home is unique, and so is every client. I believe that commissioned woodwork should be a collaborative, exciting experience where you have a clear understanding of the process, materials choices and the intended final result.
To ensure we get every detail exactly right, I generally design bespoke commissions using the 3D modelling program SketchUp. This means you get to see exactly what your furniture will look like before a single piece of wood is cut. I can help you to think through ergonomics and work with you to design the perfect-sized drawers to store your specific belongings. Every element is fully customizable, to suit your daily life.
Above all, I have a deep respect for your home. I pride myself on being friendly, highly communicative, and attentive to your needs, ensuring the installation process is as clean, calm, and respectful as possible.
Conscious Craftsmanship & Natural Finishes
I care deeply about environmentally sound practices, and this ethos is reflected in the materials I choose to work with. I am always happy to talk through exactly why I select certain timbers and how they benefit both your home and the environment.
I regularly craft with a carefully chosen selection of beautiful materials, including:
Locally sourced English hardwoods including Ash, Cherry, Oak and Walnut
European and American Oak
Premium sheet materials such as Birch Plywood and Valchromat
High-quality reclaimed materials
As an environmentally aware craftsman, I choose not to provide painted finishes. Instead, I enhance the natural grain and texture of the wood by selecting the most appropriate natural finish. This varies, depending on the type of timber being used, and its intended use. The choices include my own handmade furniture waxes, natural oils, and Osmo hardwax oil.
How I Work
When you hire me, you work directly with me from the initial design consultation through to the final result. I operate independently as a solo craftsman, ensuring a consistent standard of excellence and clear communication without the confusion of a large team. When a project requires specialized skills, such as electrical or plumbing work, I on a trusted network of certified tradespeople, on an as-needed basis.
My joinery is produced in a well-equipped, home-based workshop utilizing a blend of modern cabinet-making machinery and traditional hand tools. To maximize efficiency in my small workshop, I partner with Sydenhams to have sheet materials precision-cut to size.
My Workshop and Office are located at my home, and as such, they are not open to the public. All postal communications can be directed to my dedicated PO Box, which is; Hykel, PO Box 3590, Bristol, BS69RJ
If you are based in the Bristol area and are looking for a piece of custom made furniture, a skilled joiner or a creative to help transform a space in your home, I would love to hear from you.
