Welcome to the Workshop: Crafting Conscientious Furniture in Bristol

Hello, and welcome to the very first post of From the Workshop.

I’m Alex, an independent interior carpenter, bespoke furniture maker, and artist based in Bristol. If you are new to my work, I’ve spent the last decade working inside people’s homes, helping to transform them into beautiful, organized, and functional living spaces.

Over the years, my home-based workshop has evolved, and so has my practice. I started this journal to give you a behind-the-scenes look at that process, and to share my genuine enthusiasm for crafting everyday life out of natural timber and sustainably produced, man-made boards.

What to Expect from this Journal

Whether you are looking to commission a set of custom fitted alcove cabinets for your Bristol home, or you're searching online for the perfect solid oak coffee table, my goal is to demystify the woodworking process. In the coming weeks and months, I'll be using this space to share:

  • Behind the Build: Insights into my workshop process through videos, with breakdowns of what I’m up to. (The comments will be open, so please ask questions!)

  • The 3D Design Process: How I use SketchUp to collaborate with clients, ensuring you see, and tweak, exactly what your furniture will look like before a single piece of wood is cut.

  • Beauty from Waste: How I transform workshop offcuts into unique wall art and homewares.

  • Material Deep-Dives: Why I choose to work with materials like European Oak, Birch Ply, Valchromat, and English hardwoods, and how to care for them.

Conscientious Craftsmanship

If there is one thing that defines my approach, it is a deep respect for the materials I use and the homes I work in.

As an environmentally aware craftsman, I am on a mission to truly understand the ecological implications of the materials I handle. Be it good or bad, I want to continually expand my knowledge and share that research with you. By doing this, I can speak with absolute confidence when advising you on ecological choices. My hope is that this site will gradually become a trusted resource for anyone who wants to cut through the greenwashing and be clear about where materials come from, how they are made, and what that means for the planet.

Let's Bring the Outside In and Build Something Beautiful

I am incredibly excited to expand my workshop’s horizons. Alongside my local bespoke interior carpentry, I am also launching a new line of handcrafted coffee tables and smaller 'Beauty from Waste' pieces available to homes across the UK.

Thank you for stopping by and supporting independent craftsmanship. Please follow along if you want to see the things I create, get early access to limited-edition pieces in my online shop, or join me as I research how we can make better material choices.

If you are based in Bristol and need a skilled, conscientious interior carpenter and furniture maker, please do get in touch.

Let’s make better stuff.

Alex Hykel
